The Flying Dutchman Tatoo, 2013

Today we had the opportunity to meet Herke, “The flying Duthman Tatoo, one of the tattoo artists better considered in Europe, due to his seriousness and for being specialized in tattooing Yokai (creatures half-human, half-animal) . For us, that we don´t have any knowledge in this subject, it has been an introduction to this curious world, that more than curious it´s philosophical. Herke explained that a tattoo could change the energy of the person, give it more strength. But he insisted that before doing a tattoo, the person must think that is for life and not to be swayed by fashion. He makes traditional Japanese art with modern nuances, always respecting the “Yokai” rules. He told us that in these types of tattoos, through a conversation with you, translates your ideas into a design that is just for you, because his tattoos are unique, never printed again in another skin.

Contemporary Cartographies. Drawing Thought. CaixaForum Barcelona

9 Sep

Dates: 25 July – 28 October 2012.

Place: CaixaForum Barcelona (Av. de Francesc Ferrer i Guàrdia, 6-8).Curator: Helena Tatay.

We map our world in order to gain a glimpse of the reality in which we live. Since time immemorial, maps have been used to represent, translate and encode all kinds of physical, mental and emotional territories. Our representation of the world has evolved in recent centuries and, today, with globalisation and the Internet, traditional concepts of time and space, along with methods for representing the world and knowledge, have been definitively transformed. In response to this paradigm shift, contemporary artists question systems of representation and suggest new formulas for classifying reality.

The ultimate aim of Contemporary Cartographies. Drawing Thought, an exhibition that seeks to draw a map formed by cartographies created by twentieth- and twenty-first century artists, is to invite the visitor to question both the systems of representation that we use and the ideas that underpin them.

The exhibition, organised and produced by ”la Caixa” Foundation, is comprises more than 140 works in a wide range of formats – from maps and drawings to video installations and digital art – on loan from thecollections of several major contemporary art galleries. The artists represented include such essential figures as Salvador Dalí, Paul Klee, Marcel Duchamp, Yves Klein, Gordon Matta-Clark, Richard Hamilton, Mona Hatoum and Richard Long, shoulder-to-shoulder with a roster of contemporary artists, including Art & Language, Artur Barrio, Carolee Schneemann, Ana Mendieta, Erick Beltrán, On Kawara, Alighiero Boetti, Thomas Hirschhorn and Francis Alÿs, amongst others. Finally, the exhibition is completed by a series ofrevealing documents drawn up by experts from other fields, such as Santiago Ramón y Cajal, Lewis Carroll and Carl Gustav Jung.

This September, we can still enjoy, if we have not already done it, the first monographic exhibition of the British Palestinian artist in Barcelona.

Born in Beirut in 1952, Hatoum studies art between this city and the British capital, where she settled  after the Lebanese civil war starts. In the early 80 she became to work with the performance and video. After spending a long period minimalist works, she begins to increase political subjects in her works, taking a conceptual shift. Her subjects will then the performance of the power structures, the criticism of the general female stereotypes and gender criticism, exile and displacement. In this period we can find such important works with a dense content as Measures of Distance (1988).

In 1989 she makes her first sculptural installation: “The light at the end” in the

Showroom in London. In the 90s, her work turn in more metaphorical way, less narrative, and she builds large installations that invoke the body, the public-private dualism and rich conceptual games.

In 1995 she is finalist in the Turner Prize in London and in 1997 one of his works are included in the Sensation exhibition organized by the Saatchi Gallery, which runs through London, Berlin and New York. Hatoum is established as one of the most important artists of the late twentieth and early twenty-first.
