25th Guitar Festival Barcelona continues until 5th of july

11 Mar

The Guitar Festival of Barcelona celebrates its 25th anniversary this year and brings along one of the best musical proposals for this spring. This celebratory edition is marked by a wide range of genres, from the Spanish guitar to hard rock, with the guitar-based music as a core theme, thus appealing to a young, modern and more urban audience.

The festival showcases great acts such as the London-based indie rock band Fanfarlo, opening this edition on the 20th of February at the BARTS Theatre and the Spanish singer Rosario presenting her new album on the 5th of March at Palau de la Musica.

Other headliners include the british old-timers The Stranglers on the 1st of April, Spanish singer Luz Casal on the 20th of March and the UK-based group Crystal Fighters displaying their alternative rock, guitar-based dance music at Sant Jordi Club on the 15th of May.

10 reasons to visit Barcelona in autumn and winter

11 Nov

Barcelona

Barcelona

1. Barcelona has a Mediterranean climate and dry seasons during the autumn and winter period. Barcelona is a coastal city, that´s why it does not snow and the temperatures are quite mild: in the coldest month, January, it does not drop below 10 degrees Celsius (50F). The chances of precipitation are greater than during the summer, but still scarce. You can go around with a sweater and a jacket without having to be wrapped in thousands of layers of clothes or with an umbrella in the bag.

2. Visiting museums and art centres during the autumn-winter is a treat, because the volume of people is much lower than in spring or summer. Of course if you plan to visit any of the Gaudi buildings, either Sagrada Familia or La Pedrera, the Parc Güell or Casa Batlló, you should buy your tickets online to avoid queuing, that does not change throughout the year.

Barceloneta in autum / winter

Barceloneta in autum / winter

3. Did we mention that it hardly rains and it does not snow? 😉 The terraces and beach walks are still desirable in autumn and winter.

4. The price of accommodation in Barcelona between the months of November and January is much cheaper than from March to October. Find our great deals!

5. You will not need to check the fashion magazines to see what the latest trends are, as Barcelona is a showcase of modern fashion itself. You can go shopping in the elegant Paseo de Gracia, the Portal del Angel, to Girona street outlets or any of the shopping centres located throughout the city.

Parc de Collserola

Parc de Collserola

6. Temperatures during these months are ideal for hiking trails in the natural park of Collserola. This is one of the largest parks in the world and has lots of archaeological sites (especially Iberian villages like La Peña del Moro at the border point between the towns of Sant Just Desvern, Sant Feliu de Llobregat and Esplugues de Llobregat) . To get there you can go by train from Plaza Catalunya with the S1.

7. January the 7th is the beginning of the sales period! Bring empty suitcases, here you can fill them with clothes.

8. Barcelona in autumn and winter is full of events, concerts and exhibitions. From October to January there are events such as the Festival In-Edit, the Voll Damm Jazz Festival, the World Press Photo, and different markets like Smart City Expo, BcnRail, Living Expominer, Auto Retro, Children’s Festival or EXPOHOGAR.

9. Barcelona is the city of architecture and design, modernism and culture, with many art centres, galleries and buildings that take your breath away. Autumn and winter are great seasons to visit them all, without the competition from the summer sun.

To eat in Barcelona

To eat in Barcelona

10. If you are someone who does not want to follow timetables on holidays in Barcelona there will be no problem. You can eat almost any time of the day what you want, from the most sophisticated tapas to seafood paella on Passeig Joan de Borbón. Menus are very economical and of good quality throughout the centre. During the winter you will have less competition to find a table, but you will be surprised to see that the city centre is always full of atmosphere.

This will be a multi-screen edition, meaning that some films will be broadcasted online simultaneously to the Barcelona premiere, as part of the festival.

SOME OF THE FEATURED DOCUMENTARIES ON THE PROGRAM

Harry Dean Stanton: Partly Fiction

The most peculiar and silent actor in all Hollywood breaks our hearts by talking about his journey and performing some of his favorite melodies. Nocturnal confessions, fragility at point blank range, damage assessment and “Blue Moon” in a broken voice that will make the earth shiver.

The Sound of Belgium

Belgians “work hard and party harder.” A clubber travels through the contagious yet obscure Belgian club scene, from the 20’s barrel organ to the 90’s hardcore, passing through the 60’s popcorn and the 80’s newbeat on the road to world domination. A clubland all of its own making.

Nitsa 94/96: el giro electronic

“It all exploded from there”. The legendary Barcelonese club with the revolving dance floor, pioneer of electronica in Spain and cradle to DJ Sideral, explained with loving scratches (Jeff Mills, Angel Molina and more), founders and fans from its birth until the bombastic 90’s.

The Punk Singer

The Punk Singer

The Punk Singer

This is the definitive profile of Kathleen Hanna, frontwoman of Bikini Kill and Le Tigre. She lets us into her inner world for the first time: riot grrrl, family, fame, Kurt Cobain, Lyme disease and her return as Julie Ruin. An arduous odyssey; no concessions.

AKA Doc Pomus

All greatness comes from pain. The life of Doc Pomus, composer of numerous hits (for Elvis and others) in a beautiful blues of disability, solitude and perseverance.  The full Hall of Fame sings his praises, from Lou  Reed and Dion, to Phil Spector and Ben E. King.

Have you ever visited the Castle of Montjuic?

13 Sep

Castle of Montjuic

Castle of Montjuic

The castle was built in the 18th century not to defend Barcelona, but to watch it. Maybe that´s why the Castle of Montjuic is a magnificent place to see the city, specially the port and La Rambla. In the 19th century the castle was used as a prison, and for several decades of the 20th century it was sadly a place of execution. Nowadays the castle is a Military Museum. During July and August its gardens host the Open Air Film Festival Sala Montjuïc, a classical event of the city where the best independent films are shown.
